_description
dwell Magazine (a newly founded architectural publication) asked me to work with them on the complete redesign and reprogramming of their website. One of the designers at dwell was previously employed at MetaDesign while I was there, and hence knew my quality of development work. The mandate from the dwell Magazine editorial and design management was to literally start from scratch. Our only cue in design direction was the previous version of the site (which did not work for dwell ultimately). dwell also presented a selection of color palettes and architectural illustrations as an inspirational starting point.

This was a unique project in that an experienced design entity, such as dwell, handed over all aspects of design to the development entity. It allowed my development team to explore all aspects of design and implementation relating to their site (ex. color palettes, page form and grids, content models, flash experience).

To formalize all of our research and design exploration, I brought in Lucas Kuzma from machinatus.net. He further refined both the page blocking/grid system (which in turn mapped out our page templates for the CMS system), and the flash and XML data integration. The end result was a simple yet effective grid design built in D/HTML and supported by a low bandwidth Flash based navigation module (controlled by XML parameters). The modular site design coupled with the CGI/XML Content Management System (developed in the second phase of this site project), enabled the editorial staff members to update the content of the site (ex. imagery, colors, text, links) w/o compromising the grid based online magazine format.

The site won a Silver Medal Award for Online Design presented by The Society for Publication Design (www.spd.org) in their 2001 Print Annual.
