iPhone 2.0

To install this update, you must download the ipsw file and iTunes 7.7. Open iTunes and clicking the option + clicking the check for update button will prompt iTunes to ask for the ipsw location; once you’ve done that, iTunes will begin the firmware update.

Mac FAIL Group on Flickr

Mac FAIL!

I created a group earlier this AM for the ultimate in life imitating art for Mac users… its called Mac FAIL and is an homage to all you mac users who have crazy things happen to your screen whilst working… This arty color strewn screen capture inspired me to do something about it!

My flickr photo group was link checked by my good friends at Wired Blogs

Apple Spotlight… Motherfucker!

motherfucker

Searching for an MP3 track on my HD and saw the ‘Definition’ option in Spotlight… so I clicked it… and this is what I saw… Almost fell out of my chair laughing… I must say this is a very cool addition and very useful feature… I wonder what other curse words I can find definitions for?

BSOD on Leopard? ROFL!

BSOD on Leopard

This is the view of a PC on the network via the Leopard Finder. Its HI-larious that the PCs on the network are shown with a clunky old display with a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) visibile to boot! Pretty sneaky one Apple, but I like it!

Thanks to Luke for posting his screencap!

My iPhone Usability Enhancements

I blogged about this earlier on my companies corporate blog site for Snap, but wanted to add some depth to this on my own blog.

As you may know I got an iPhone the day they were released and about an hour after I had it in hand, it was activated and I was using it as my regular phone… After about a week and a half of using it heavily every day, including on a camping trip over the July 4th holiday weekend… I have a few things that I want to see Apple improve upon…

As I use the iPhone I add user experience insight and thoughts to a Note I have with a running tally of bullets. Its great cause I can make an immediate note to myself in the app while its fresh in my mind. Here is my list in NO particular order…

  • Typing: Copy/Select/Paste Text (from anywhere to anywhere)
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth File Exchange (for Photos/Ringtones)
  • Photos: Add Photo Albums (and Assign Photos to Albums)
  • Ringtones: Ringtone Selection (BT Transfer/Recording/MP3s)
  • Camera: Zoom In/Out, Exposure, Shooting Modes (ex. ISOs)
  • Video: Recording of h.264 Videos
  • Auto Recognition: Phone Num/Email Add/Str Add in ‘Notes’ App
  • Mapping: Select FWY or Surface Street Alternate Routes
  • Contacts: Edit Contacts in Email ‘Send’ Mode
  • Attachments: Send Email with Multiple Attachments (ex. Photos)
  • Attached Files: Support More… (ex. Keynote, PPT)
  • Podcasting: Record Audio/Video and Post to Blogs from iPhone
  • MS Exchange: Better Support! Calendaring and Contacts too!

My biggest gripe though is in the support of Exchange. In all the public discussion of this it was pretty clear there would be support. But, if you look at what they really have its kinda half assed. IMAP from an Exchange system is only half the picture. I need Calendaring and Contacts syncronization as well. Email is good, but not good enough. I really need to see better integration with Exchange! Adding a application settings tab with the word ‘exchange’ is kind of a fake out of you ask me, since its only IMAP email.

All things aside, the iPhone is a great piece of work and I applaud Apple for the accomplishment… Hopefully we’ll see a software update to the iPhone in the near future to add some of these enhancements in…

AdiumX, All Your IM Belong To Us

AdiumX

I know, I know… Its a tad late on the AdiumX for OSX tip, but I had to make a post on this… I have been holding out on changing my IM client from iChatAV for months now. Recently I hit my limit on AIM buddies I can add to my addressbook in iChatAV, I got capped at 200!?. I needed to add people from Yahoo Messenger, MSN and Jabber so I started digging around my link archives and remembered AdiumX. Well, its a pretty amazing app (aside from the fact it does not support Video Chat like iChatAV yet), its got everything else I would want.

Here are some highlights of the features I use most:

  • More granular and detailed buddy list sorting (ex. Alphabetical by Name, by Online Status, by Group, etc)
  • Multiple IM clients and logins (I use AIM and YIM now, but am adding MSN and Jabber soon)
  • Growl messaging and notification support (Whats Growl?)
  • Tabbed message management (So you can have mult chats open in one unified window)

AdiumX Stockholm Theme

Another aspect that I am very excited about is all the well designed Themes that are supported on the AduiumX site Extras tab… I am using the Stockholm theme right now.

Magnetosphere iTunes Visualizer

Magnetosphere
‘My god, its full of stars…’
- Daves final words in 2001

I LOVE the visualization aspects of iTunes. As I mentioned awhile ago here on my blog the Whitecap plugin for iTunes was pretty amazing. Now I am mentioning the Magnetosphere plugin as my new favorite. Its by far THE coolest piece of iTunes kit you can get. Dont take my word for it though, download it and run it yourself…

Magnetosphere was born of some experiments in Processing that Barbarian Robert Hodgin (of Flight404 fame) was conducting on his experimental blog. We got a lot of positive feedback from the visualization style, and a lot of requests to “use this in our project.” Too many, actually, for us to handle, so we figured we’d get the thing into a form that anyone could use. Basically, we made Magnetosphere by making a Processing application, and then porting it line by line to C++ so we could use the iTunes visualizer SDK to develop an iTunes plug-in for the Mac and PC.

Al Gore Sports Three Apple 30″ Displays!!!

330

I just saw this photo on Time Magazine online where Al Gore is sporting three Apple 30″ Displays on his Mac System (thanks for the tip Paul). You def. need the Mac Pro Tower to drive that many huh? Not only does he use Apple Keynote to do all his awesome slides for Inconvenient Truth, but he rocks 30″ Apple displays. That is so rad!

Wii Finder Widget for OSX

Wii Widget

If your one of the many people who is dying to get your hands on a Nintendo Wii and has had horrible luck in getting one so far, this little OSX Dashboard Widget may be for you…

I have had THE worst luck every time I have been in line waiting for a Wii, I end up either getting there too late, or they sell out before I can get up to the register to get my (1) unit. Oh well, I’ll let you know when I get one via this neat widget.

Note: Its also available as a Yahoo! Widget as well… Just pick the variation you want before downloading…

Apple ‘Publication’ Style Guide 2006

This thing is almost a good 200(!) pages, and most of it is just text on text, with a few images to illustrate specific points. This is really a design geeks tome of all things ‘Apple in Print’. Pretty awesome!

The Apple Publication Style guide provides editorial guidelines for text in instructional publications, technical documentation, reference information, training programs, and the software user interface.
