Rendezvous, A film by Claude Lelouch

Rendezvous

Watch Rendezvous.

A little known car related racing film by famous Director of the seminal A Man and A Woman, Claude Lelouch… called Rendezvous. Produced and filmed in 1976 this is an insane and almost always nail biting right behind the wheel documentation of an experienced (but intentionally anonymous) Le Mans Gran Prix race car driver speeding Lelouch thru Paris in the early morning.

Lelouch is suppose to have strapped a film camera on the hood of a Ferrari race car (later proven to be Lelouch driving himself in a Mercedes) and used some surplus film stock from one of his earlier productions… This film was banned in Paris for many years… and only recently resurfaced on DVD and YouTube… In May of 2006 there was a documentary on the making of the film which cleared up any ambiguity…

Helvetica Film! Part II

Helvetica Film

I mentioned a few weeks or posts ago that there was a documentary film out on my favorte typeface Helvetica. I was able to get in to see the late (and sold out) screening of the film at USC one evening. Since it was the 50th birthday of Helvetica, they also had a cake to celebrate… spelling the name of the typeface… with each letter being a different flavor. They also had buttons, tshirts and posters available for sale. It was the most brilliant ‘designer’ schwag I have had the pleasure of buying!

The film was a very well crafted piece of work done by Gary Hustwit whos previous fame I was aware of for producing the documentary on Bob Moog, a world known electronic music instrument inventor who created the MOOG synth that everyone uses now in popular electronic music. I own the documentary ‘Moog’ on DVD, its well worth the purchase alone for the music in the background!

When I heard about the Helvetica film (as posted previously) I was ecstatic and could not wait to search out some more information and hopfeully sneak a peek at some clips to see what lay in store… I ended up finding this clip with my good friend (and ex boss at MetaDesign) Erik Spiekermannand… this clip with Experimental Jetset an amazing design company in Amsterdam… and this clip with my ultimate fave type designer of all time Wim Crouwel… I own many of his Font Books and all of the legally produced Typefaces available for purchase…

I highly reccommend trying to check out this film if you get a chance… There are still some dates left for local screenings… just check the official website for more infos…

My all time favorite typeface now has a film to further its awareness and appreciation of its beauty globally!

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica will begin screening at film festivals worldwide starting in early 2007, followed by cinema screenings across the US and Europe, and the DVD release.

Miyazaki Profiled in The New Yorker

Hayao Miyazaki

If your a fan of Miyazaki, this article will give you some additional insight and depth into his creative mind… I for one loved Totoro, Nausicaa and Porco Rosso, in addition to Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away…

This week in the magazine, Margaret Talbot writes about the Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, the writer and director of such films as “Spirited Away.” Here, with The New Yorker’s Daniel Cappello, Talbot discusses Miyazaki’s films, his influences, and his temperament.

Ruben Fleischer aka Ruben FM

Ruben FM

Just recently I was watching a Music Video and I was like, who did this? I did some checking and damn, it was Ruben Fleischer (again!). This guy has been banging out the quality and very creative music videos. If you have been reading the posts of late, Ruben did a couple of the latest Dizzee Rascal vids (top one)! Ruben has a huge assortment of others on his Ruben FM site (Gold Chains, DJ Format, the list goes on…), so check them all out. Oh yeah, he has other interesting content there as well.

SO apparently he is in LA, maybe I will get an opp to buy him a drink sometime. Sounds like a pretty solid and down to earth dood. Heya Ruben, how is it working/living in LA for now?

“Stander” Movie

I recently saw this film on DVD rental and was amazed at its cinematography, soundtrack and acting. I have been following Thomas Jane and his acting career since he was a pot smoking criminal in the John Woo movie Face/Off (in case you don’t know, he was in the high security prison sequence). In addition, the soundtrack for this film was top notch, including tracks from The Free Assocation (introduced by David Holmes) to the Temple of Sound to name a few. The movie soundtrack is nowhere to be found even on GEMM.com. So would be a good project to test out soulseex.

“Stander” is based on the true story of André Stander, a South African homicide/robbery police captain who became one of the most notorious bank robbers in the country. After participating in the brutal killing in a riot in the line of duty, Stander decided to defy the very system he was part of, and set off on an audacious crime spree; robbing banks during his lunch hour then returning to the scene of the crime to lead the investigation. Finally, caught by the same police force he worked with, he was jailed and, subsequently befriended Allan Heyl and Lee McCall. After a daring jailbreak, the ‘Stander Gang’ committed a large number of robberies, which grew increasingly bold over time. In the eyes of the public, their blatant disregard for authority made them South Africa’s most popular anti-heroes. In reality, however, Stander and his gang were the most wanted men in the country.
