QRCode Commando Patch

p8tch
©2008 tikaro

It was only a matter of time before someone made a QR Code commando patch! This is going to be added to my TAD Gear Stealth Jacket SS posthaste…

Here’s a velcro-backed QRcode patch I’ve been working on. It’s a polyester-twill patch, with the design applied using dye sublimation (so it’s waterproof.) Each p8tch contains a unique encoded URL. That URL can be read by mobile phones, now including the iPhone!

The patch links to a configurable proxy URL. Each p8tch comes with a unique keyphrase that allows you to set the destination. So your patch can link to:
* Your blog,
* Your Flickr photostream,
* Your Facebook/MySpace page
* A Google map link to your secret headquarters,
* Your Amazon Wish list/PayPal tip jar
…whatever you want.

Your friend snaps a picture of the QRcode with their mobile phone, and then they’re looking at the URL you set. You know, just like in Japan.

Of course, that’s assuming your friend has a steady hand and some patience; the iPhone QRcode readers are in their infancy, but with some patience and good light, I can reliably shoot a patch with the iPhone. More mature QRcode readers like the ones on board the Nokia N95 are faster (but rarer in the US.)

The design at the top is by Kenn Munk, and there are several available (cf. the next picture)

You can now buy your own at www.p8tch.com!

Helvetica Film! Part II

Helvetica Film

I mentioned a few weeks or posts ago that there was a documentary film out on my favorte typeface Helvetica. I was able to get in to see the late (and sold out) screening of the film at USC one evening. Since it was the 50th birthday of Helvetica, they also had a cake to celebrate… spelling the name of the typeface… with each letter being a different flavor. They also had buttons, tshirts and posters available for sale. It was the most brilliant ‘designer’ schwag I have had the pleasure of buying!

The film was a very well crafted piece of work done by Gary Hustwit whos previous fame I was aware of for producing the documentary on Bob Moog, a world known electronic music instrument inventor who created the MOOG synth that everyone uses now in popular electronic music. I own the documentary ‘Moog’ on DVD, its well worth the purchase alone for the music in the background!

When I heard about the Helvetica film (as posted previously) I was ecstatic and could not wait to search out some more information and hopfeully sneak a peek at some clips to see what lay in store… I ended up finding this clip with my good friend (and ex boss at MetaDesign) Erik Spiekermannand… this clip with Experimental Jetset an amazing design company in Amsterdam… and this clip with my ultimate fave type designer of all time Wim Crouwel… I own many of his Font Books and all of the legally produced Typefaces available for purchase…

I highly reccommend trying to check out this film if you get a chance… There are still some dates left for local screenings… just check the official website for more infos…

My all time favorite typeface now has a film to further its awareness and appreciation of its beauty globally!

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica will begin screening at film festivals worldwide starting in early 2007, followed by cinema screenings across the US and Europe, and the DVD release.

FREITAG Retail = 17 CONTAINERS!

FREITAG Container

My good friends Dani and Markus at FREITAG have just opened a retail store in Zürich, Switzerland. It consists of 17 used shipping Containers. You all know that I am a great fan of these unique and subtle guerilla logo laden subliminal advertising items. I LOVE them!

When I heard that the FREITAG bros were doing this, I first said damn them (as I really wanted to make my own container store front), but then I said, yipee, as now I have an excuse to go to Zürich and visit the store! Its a very very cool structure and some of the images on their flickr page are just phenomenal.

The shop will have over 1600 FREITAG bags to choose from! AND I am sure all of the other great FREITAG schwag will be there as well…

Apple ‘Publication’ Style Guide 2006

This thing is almost a good 200(!) pages, and most of it is just text on text, with a few images to illustrate specific points. This is really a design geeks tome of all things ‘Apple in Print’. Pretty awesome!

The Apple Publication Style guide provides editorial guidelines for text in instructional publications, technical documentation, reference information, training programs, and the software user interface.

Profile: Cynthia Tuan, a bridge to…

After just getting back from Switzerland where she was overseeing the hand manufacturing of a super limited amount of her recent design publication, Intersection: 4 Cities/360 People, Cynthia took some time to forward me the URL to her recently launched personal portfolio site and a more detailed descriptive text on her truely amazing and meticulous typographic specimen of a book…

Her biography follows…

Originally from Houston, Texas, Cynthia Tuan spent her formative years in the eclectic and colorful city of Los Angeles. In 1996, she received her BFA with an emphasis in visual communication from Art Center College of Design. She has an extensive background in editorial, information and interface design for companies such as Banana Republic, Buzz Magazine, Leagas Delaney, Phoenix Pop and Levi’s.

In 2001, her passions for structuring narrative and information led her to the University of Art and Design in Basel, Switzerland where her thesis project, “Intersection: 4 Cities/360 People” was awarded one of the Most Beautiful Swiss Books of 2004.

Now, her journey brings her full circle, back to the States, to work as designer, utilizing her skills and sensitivity to content, collaboration and process. When she’s not working, Cynthia enjoys reading, sport climbing, surfing and knitting.

Here is some more information on Cynthia’s hand crafted design publication…

Intersection: 4 Cities/360 People

The Irish have a saying, “a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet.” However, the reversal is equally valid. A friend can be at times but a stranger who has happened to cross your path.

This fundamental revision of thinking is especially relevant given the global context of the world we now live in. Development of cosmopolitan centers, cheaper transportation, advancements in communication technologies and the breakdown of a singular national identity in favor of more complex and overlapping allegiances, have opened new opportunities to whose paths we intersect. Our relationships are no longer restricted by rigid yet passive constructs such as citizenship, ethnicity or national identity; and therefore evolve according to more flexible and dynamic ways of interaction.

Spanning the period of over four years, Cynthia Tuan meticulously documented her encounters. The collection of encounters is assembled into Intersection: 4 Cities/360 People, a book which explores the dynamics of connections and interactions; black and white statistical data are translated into colorful narrative dialogues reflective of the author’s own multicultural landscape. The goal was not to create information graphics rather to stay true to the content and show how graphics can be transformed and inspired by information.

The secondary and adjoining title: Intersection: 360 People/4 Cities introduces the people and their relationship with the author. Important to also note, the second book acts as a key to the first one.

Designers Notebook: This is the first blog entry of its kind in the Designer Profiles Category. I am planning on posting to this section more over the coming weeks. So keep your eyes peeled for more featured Designers
