I mentioned a few weeks or posts ago that there was a documentary film out on my favorte typeface Helvetica. I was able to get in to see the late (and sold out) screening of the film at USC one evening. Since it was the 50th birthday of Helvetica, they also had a cake to celebrate… spelling the name of the typeface… with each letter being a different flavor. They also had buttons, tshirts and posters available for sale. It was the most brilliant ‘designer’ schwag I have had the pleasure of buying!
The film was a very well crafted piece of work done by Gary Hustwit whos previous fame I was aware of for producing the documentary on Bob Moog, a world known electronic music instrument inventor who created the MOOG synth that everyone uses now in popular electronic music. I own the documentary ‘Moog’ on DVD, its well worth the purchase alone for the music in the background!
When I heard about the Helvetica film (as posted previously) I was ecstatic and could not wait to search out some more information and hopfeully sneak a peek at some clips to see what lay in store… I ended up finding this clip with my good friend (and ex boss at MetaDesign) Erik Spiekermannand… this clip with Experimental Jetset an amazing design company in Amsterdam… and this clip with my ultimate fave type designer of all time Wim Crouwel… I own many of his Font Books and all of the legally produced Typefaces available for purchase…
I highly reccommend trying to check out this film if you get a chance… There are still some dates left for local screenings… just check the official website for more infos…
