What are QR Codes?

If you don’t know, QR Codes are a variant of the Barcode, but in 3D space (most popular in Japan currently, but you can see them on your UPS shipping labels here). Basically a square with a number of control points that store various snippets of data. Anything from your typical mobile phone vCard information, a website URL, a general text note, etc. They are pretty common in Japan for getting additional information of websites, products, etc. and a whole new assortment of mobile phones now recognize them and display the information about the said product on the phones display.

Since I acquired my new Vodafone 802se, which is suppose to be able to read QR Codes, I did some research on how to generate my own for this BLOG. I found a couple of sites on the subject. If you want a detailed primer on QR Codes, check out this site. If you want to start making QR Codes on your own I have some links to a couple of sites with web based tools to generate them.

I see a qr-code on your page. I can’t find any software to read this sort of symbol. Do you know one ?

Thx!

You need a mobile phone capable of recognizing the QR Code. Its built in to the particular mobile phone. I did some research and although the QR Code format and technology is partially open source, no one has developed a software package (ie. J2ME for other mobile devices) as of yet. So far, the only devices that will recognize QR Codes, are ones with the technology pre-installed/supported out of box… Unfortunate for me, the Vodafone 802se is not one, so I had to have one of my Japanese friends test the QR Code on my webpage out. It works..
