Traveling has become very popular in recent history. We are traveling more than our parents even did and a lot more than our grandparents did. We often don’t give a second thought to the vast distances we travel. The only concern we have is the possibility of jet lag. Our world is getting smaller and there’s now very few places we can’t go.

And, for us, that’s a good thing. We can now not only experience other cultures but understand them, too. We’re able to experience how other people live and work. However, there are some things you should know about before you travel.

1. Surprisingly, most travelers don’t research even basic details about the country they plan to visit. You should consider this an essential part of planning any trip in order to avoid disappointment or any unpleasant surprises.

2. Checking on the standard weather for the destination is a pretty basic thing to do. That way you an pack appropriate clothing for you trip. Although it should be pretty obvious, make sure you check weather conditions for the actual time of year that you’re visiting. For example, June to November is hurricane season in the Caribbean, so, even if you don’t encounter a hurricane, you can probably count on some impressive thunder storms along with pretty hot and humid weather.

3. Be sure your travel insurance covers you properly for your destination and for the length of your stay. You DID get travel insurance – right?

4. It seems that the whole world runs on paperwork. Make sure you’ve got everything you need in the way of documentation for your trip. Passports, visas, immunization records, etc. If you don’t have everything you need, the airline could refuse to let you board or the country to deny you entry. Find out what you need and make sure you have it.

5. Check to see if you need to be immunized against any diseases that may be prevalent at your destination. Better safe than sorry.

6. If you plan to be driving during your vacation, ensure that your license will be accepted in that country. You might need to obtain an international drivers license. It’s also a good idea to be familiar with the local driving laws.

7. And here’s the kicker – is your passport current? If it’s not, do you have time to get it renewed? Note: if it’s less than a month from expiring, some countries may deny you entry. Check now and be sure!
